Hey, my name is Hugh Donaldson, and I’m excited you’ve joined the WeConnect Community.

WeConnect started with a simple idea: to create a space where employees can connect with one another to learn and share information, insights, and real-world experiences about their employer -provided benefits and their workplace in general. In an age where employers otherwise have complete control over the narrative, WeConnect exists to make sure workers have a voice, a network, the facts they need, and the tools to get help.

How My Journey Started

In 2023, I left one industry for another. It was an exciting move, but for the first time in over a decade, I took a serious look at my employee benefits. As I dug in, I realized I had been asleep at the wheel. For example, I discovered that over my years at the company, I had paid more than $7,000 in premiums for an employer-sponsored voluntary benefit I did not understand--didn’t know what it was, what it covered, or when it applied.

At some point in my employment, I had simply clicked a box on a form, and every paycheck since had sent a piece of my hard-earned money into the cosmic void after taxes. I assumed an “employee benefit” was supposed to, well you know, benefit me and my family. Turns out, not so much.  I learned later that this benefit I paid 100% of the premiums for actually was making kickbacks to my employer.

The Shocking Truth About Employee Benefits

I was embarrassed. I started calling human resources, insurance providers, and colleagues--anyone who could help me make sense of what I was seeing.

What I began to uncover was alarming, in not just this benefit but others. Kickbacks. Flip logic. Spread pricing. Predatory practices disguised as policy. And deliberate obfuscation. Employee benefits designed for confusion, not clarity. Built to enrich employers and their vendors at the expense of the very people they are supposed to protect, you and me.

Why WeConnect Exists

That was the turning point. I realized my experience was not unique. Millions of employees are in the same position, paying into benefit systems they do not understand, trusting that someone is looking out for them, when in fact the system is looking out for itself—serving only to exploit the employees it is supposed to benefit.

WeConnect was built to flip the script. We are here to increase benefits transparency, expose predatory benefit practices, and give employees the resources and knowledge they need to protect themselves and their families.

I work a great 9-to-5 corporate job at a company with employee benefits that are good — not great… yet. I have no products to sell you, no book to push, no PDF to download. Just information and tools that have helped me make sense of maximizing my own employee benefits and that can help you do the same.

The truth is, the only way this broken system gets fixed is employees like us demanding better from their employers.
